Introduction to Steel Challenge
If you are brand new to the world of competitive shooting, then this is the class for you. This course is designed to prepare the shooter for their first Steel Challenge match. Steel Challenge is the absolute perfect starting point for competitive shooting. Steel Challenge is not as dynamic as USPSA in that there is very little moving during a course of fire. The shooter stands in a box and engages steel targets at ranges from 7 yards out to 20+ yards. Children as young as 10 are welcome to join us for this exciting new class.
Ozark Dynamics instructors draw on their extensive experience competing in US Practical Shooting Association, IDPA, PRS, and Steel Challenge matches and walk you through the process, outlining the basics of practical shooting, range protocols, courses of fire and how they are executed, scoring, and range safety. The different skills will be broken down and explained in detail.
Topics Covered in the Course:
- Shooting stages and matches
- Steel Challenge classifications
- Range procedures and safety
- Equipment: What to wear and what not to wear
- What gun to use and how to use it
- Trigger management
- Sight management
- Target acquisition
- The draw process
- Reloading
What to bring:
- Operational handgun or pistol caliber carbine (PCC). Semiautomatic only handguns, no revolvers!
- At least two magazines for your preferred handgun or PCC
- Gun belt and holster
- Magazine holder for belt
- At least 100 rounds of ammunition
Ozark Dynamics prohibits holsters that cause sweeping or other range safety related issues on the range, such as small of back, crossdraw, and shoulder holsters. These types of holsters have their uses, but on a crowded range we insist upon belt mounted strong side hip holsters that completely cover the trigger guard.
Nylon pouch-type holsters usually do not do well in heavy range use. Inside-the-waistband holsters are often slow or even difficult to reholster the gun and we recommend range-type holsters for the class. Proficiency with range holsters easily translates to real-world holsters and makes the initial learning process simpler.
Synthetic (Kydex) ones are the most durable and serviceable.
